Lance is at Flinders University and is Director, Industry Transformation, for the national Innovative Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centre. As a Principal Policy Adviser to Premier Mike Rann from 2002 to 2008, Lance played a key role in designing and developing South Australia's Strategic Plan and the Economic Development Board, and as Deputy Chief Executive, DMITRE, Lance developed the State's Manufacturing Strategy.

He has most recently worked on economic development projects focused on industry diversification and 'new manufacturing.'
