Dion Sheppard (MSc, MCE) is the Forensic Research & Development Programme Manager at the Institute of Environmental Science & Research, Ltd (ESR), New Zealand. ESR is the NZ government’s Crown Research Institute specialising in science relating to people and communities. ESR is the sole forensic science provider to the New Zealand Police, and undertakes forensic services for New Zealand Customs, lawyers, commercial companies and private individuals. 

Dion manages ESR’s diverse forensic science research portfolio and network of research partnerships. Research projects are funded through allocated and contestable government Strategic Science Investment funding as well as international research funds and range from short term internship projects through to multi-year international research collaborations. 

Prior to embarking on research management Dion spent 15 years involved in forensic casework, attending serious crime scenes and acting as an expert witness. Dion’s research interests include the visualisation, analysis and presentation of 3D evidence; data analytics; and the commercialisation of science innovations.
